No single job title defines a person who can diagnose dyslexia. Initially, it was considered a medical diagnosis. Today, it is viewed as an educational diagnosis. Dyslexia is recognized as a specific learning disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It is also included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (5th ed., text rev.) as a specific learning disorder in reading. Professionals who are well versed in the characteristics of dyslexia and understand standardized assessments are best suited for making the diagnosis.

I use the comprehensive Tests of Dyslexia to determine diagnosis. The following is taken into consideration:

• Indexes designed to indicate the risk and probability of dyslexia 
• Composites and tests that measure reading skills (untimed and timed), spelling, specific linguistic risk factors (phonological awareness, orthographic processing, rapid automatized naming, and working memory), and vocabulary and reasoning abilities
• Self, parent, and teacher rating scales designed to capture qualitative indicators of dyslexia, such as a family history of reading problems and early difficulties with speech and language

This report can be used at school for accommodations and to request further school-based testing.

My expertise is in reading difficulties.  If I notice other concerns, I will recommend further testing, such as with a speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, or neuropsychologist.

I administer the Tests of Dyslexia-Early to children ages 5.0+ for early identification and the Tests of Dyslexia-Comprehensive to children ages 6.0+.

Early warning signs for dyslexia can appear as early as Pre-K, Kindergarten, or Grade 1. Clinicians and educators can usually identify students “at risk” for reading failure when factors such as family history and early linguistic risk factors are considered.  

Many times, dyslexia is not identified until a child is in second grade and has not learned to read as expected.

Early intervention is most effective when provided to children from Pre-K to Grade 1 prior to reading failure.

While my focus is on early detection, prevention, and intervention, I most certainly can assess adults up to age 89!

I provide in-person testing in Los Angeles, CA, OR remotely on Zoom.

There are few trained educators just offering dyslexia evaluations because of the misconceptions about who can test for dyslexia and how it is diagnosed.  Most specialists (i.e. educational psychologists and neuropsychologists) offer comprehensive evaluations for thousands of dollars and provide testing in areas you don’t often need.  This was the route I took with my son, and I wish I knew better.
